NURSING EXAM TIPS ON PATIENT POSITIONING

In nursing, proper positioning is vital.  It facilitates recovery and it aides in preventing complications. You can certainly expect some NCLEX questions that will address proper positioning.  

Tips to Answering Some NCLEX-RN Questions on Proper Positioning

  • Epidural puncture procedures- Side lying position
  • Lumbar punctures- Supine position. This prevents cerebrospinal fluid leakage, which can lead to a severe spinal headache.
  • Pulmonary embolism- Left Side with head down
  • Heatstroke- Recovery position: flat on bed with the legs raised. 
  • Buck’s Traction-  Elevate foot of the bed
  • Pregnant woman with fetal distress-Left side, knee-chest  
  • Infant with spina bifida- Prone in order to avoid rupture of the sac.
  • Post Myringotomy-On affected side
  • Post Thyroidectomy-Fowler's or Semi-Fowler's 
  • Post Total Hip- Teach the patient to avoid sleeping on affected side, avoid flexing more than 45 degrees
  • For patients confined to bed and unable to move-Reposition every 2 hours
Be sure you know all the basic positions and their proper terminology
